Canada goes ‘top secret’ high-tech to get higher on the Olympic podium

By

Despite the fact Canada has hosted the Olympics twice before — Montreal in 1976 and Calgary in 1988 – the country has never won a gold medal on home turf.

But this year, at the Winter Games in Vancouver, that’s expected to change.

In an article in the latest edition of Maclean’s magazine, it reported the secret of Canada’s success will be an $8-million project to uncover and implement the most cutting edge technology available in winter sports.

Ken MacQueen, the Maclean’s Olympic bureau chief, called this unprecedented in Canadian sport history and a ‘top secret’ technological arms race.

“[It] will give our Canadian athletes an edge both I think on the playing field, but also psychological,” MacQueen said.

There are 55 projects in all, including a super-low friction base applied to the bottom of snowboards and skis, which are said to give athletes a 15 per cent edge.
