SURREY (NEWS1130) – A key investigator into the Surrey Six killings has been put on desk duty.
Neil MacKenzie of the provincial Criminal Justice Branch acknowledges that an unnamed officer might have had an inappropriate relationship, but wouldn’t confirm that the officer or the woman in question are involved in the Surrey Six investigation.
“The branch is aware of the internal investigation that police have initiated into allegations of a relationship between a police officer and a potential witness,” says MacKenzie.
MacKenzie points out no evidence provided by the witness has been forwarded to Crown Counsel and as such, it has not played a part in any charge assessments or Crown decisions.
It’s believed the relationship in question was between an RCMP officer and a woman scheduled to testify in the case.
RCMP are now saying the woman in question is not Dennis Karbovanec’s girlfriend, as we had earlier reported.
Karbovanec is already serving time for his role in the crime.
And RCMP stress the evidence the woman provided to investigators has not been used as grounds for any charges.
They maintain the investigation has not been comprimised by this latest development.
Back in the fall of 2007, six people were killed in a Surrey tower, in what is believed to have been a hit over drugs.
Twenty-two-year-old Chris Mohan and 55-year-old Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford, however, were innocent victims, simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Karbovanec was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 15 years after pleading guilty to three counts of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
Jamie Bacon, Michael Lee, Matthew Johnson and Cody Haevischer are charged with first degree murder.
