Study: High fat foods are like a drug

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Don’t feel too bad if you can’t give up bacon or cheesecake. A new study that finds the fatty favourites have a lot in common with heroin and cocaine.

Researchers in Florida have found bacon and cheesecake can alter your brain in much the same way heroin and cocaine do, driving the development of compulsive overeating.

A study found when rats raised on regular food where given unfettered access to a high-fat menu, they lost complete control over their eating, in fact, they not only got fact, they also showed addiction like changes in their brain reward circuits, the same kind of changes seen in humans addicted to drugs.

The study is also suggesting treatments known to work on addicts may work on people who gorge on junk food.
