Municipal elections should be held every four years: report

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A provincial task force says municipal elections in B.C. should be held every four years instead of the current three.  Community and Rural Development Minister Bill Bennett says the longer terms would cut election costs and give local politicians more time to learn their jobs.

Bennett says the four-year electoral cycle could be in effect next year, meaning the following municipal elections will be held in 2015.   The task force also calls for tighter campaign finance rules and rejects calls for allowing extra voting powers for businesses.

NDP community critic Scott Fraser, a former mayor of Tofino, is welcoming the four-year election cycle, but says the task force should have recommended a cap on campaign donations.
