Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup

By

PHILADELPHIA (NEWS1130) – The Chicago Blackhawks are the Stanley Cup Champions after beating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime in Game Six. Patrick Kane was the hero for Chicago, sliding the puck past a surprised Michael Leighton for the game winner in the first overtime period.

Scott Hartnell scored, late in the third period, to force overtime but that was as close as the home team would come to forcing a Game Seven. Hawks’ captain Jonathan Toews was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy and is now the second youngest captain to win the Cup after Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby did it last year.

Hawks forward Marian Hossa is breathing a sigh of relief after finally winning the prize in his third straight attempt in his third different jersey. Chicago hadn’t won the Cup since 1961 when they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in six games, so the 49 year drought is now over.

Because the Hawks won, this also means the Stanley Cup will be spending a lot of time in B.C. There are five B.C.-born players on the team. The cup will make stops in Tsawwassen with Brent Seabrook, Vancouver with Troy Brouwer, Penticton with Duncan Keith, Maple Ridge with Andrew Ladd and Surrey with Colin Fraser.
