VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Canucks fans will have to get used to a name change now that Rogers and the Canucks organization have teamed up to rename their rink.
The Canucks’ Francesco Aquilini was wearing Rogers red and white as he announced a new partnership with the communications company.
“We’re very pleased to announce today that we’ve signed a long term arena-naming rights and exclusive telecommunications sponsorship agreement with Rogers Communications. It’s the first time in franchise history that local TV, the arena-naming rights and telecommunications sponsorship rights have been held by one company,” he told reporters.
The deal will see Rogers get extensive branding and advertising placements in the building, during games, and even at Canucks.com. Rogers executives say they’re looking forward to expanding fans’ experiences and aren’t ruling out streaming Canucks games over their phones.
Rogers already shows Canucks games on Sportsnet, but vice-chairman Phil Lind says radio rights for games could be in the cards, along with other broadcast platforms.
“When they become available, I would suspect we’ll be interested. So you’re talking about what’s available on the iPhone or the Blackberry as well,” he says.
The deal between the Canucks and Rogers will last ten years, but Rogers bosses won’t say how much it’s worth.
GM’s contract with the Canucks didn’t run out until 2015 but the company is recovering from bankruptcy, and trying to pay its taxpayer loans. The company will still be the car sponsor inside the building.
It’s not the first time a sporting venue has been named after the communications giant. Rogers Centre in Toronto is the home of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Rogers is the parent company of News1130.
