Aerosol can sets off Leyland Park explosion

By

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Investigators think an aerosol container started or contributed to an explosion and fire in Leyland Park in West Vancouver Sunday night.

Assistant Fire Chief Martin Ernst says they got a call just before 9 p.m. after a woman nearby heard a loud boom.

“It damaged about 36 square metres of grass and ground material in the park. The West Vancouver parks department is very careful when they’re cleaning the parks to minimize combustible material. But even though it’s cooler at nights, it’s actually quite dry out, and this brown material hasn’t been saturated with rain,” he says.

Ernst says there are no known witnesses or injuries, but it could have been a dangerous situation had shrapnel been flying in a park full of people.
