BBB: Scammers targeting the unemployed

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Looking for a job is tough enough.  The local Better Business Bureau says there are red flags to look out for as scammers target the unemployed.

How to get rich without leaving home is just one way to be duped out of your money.  Some legitimate companies allow this, but it’s easy for scammers to offer the deal to seniors, stay-at-home moms and students.

Another is the potential employer asking for money up front before you sign on as an employee, pushing for a couple of bucks to help pay for training or background checks.

The BBB’s Kevin Hollett explains people are typically being approached on-line.  “You get an e-mail from an interested employer to be considered for a job.  They have to provide a social insurance number, or bank account number, or even do a credit report through a website where they’re giving up personal information.”

He adds this trend is seen throughout North America with the BBB getting over 700,000 inquiries about stay-at-home companies.
