Mudslide on Vancouver Island blocks access to Port Alice

By

PORT ALICE (NEWS1130) – Part of the village on the northern part of the Island had to be evacuated after debris slid down Rumble Mountain around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Debris 15 feet high was blocking Marine Drive, the main road in the Village of Port Alice. Power was also cut off.

The local Emergency Response Command Team has evacuated a trailer park and set up a “welcoming centre” for those people who had to leave their homes. Fifty-five workers at the Neucel Pulp Mill are only able to leave by boat.

The RCMP and local emergency response staff are asking the public to stay away from the slide, as more rain is in the forecast.
