VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Parents of students at McBride Annex in East Vancouver have told the Vancouver School Board closing their school doesn’t make sense financially.
Several parents spoke at the Thursday night meeting, voicing thoughts and concerns on the possible closure.
The school only has 63 students and is operating at about 43 per cent capacity, but parents like Jonathan Waller say closing the school will hardly help the Vancouver School Board with its $16 million deficit. “All the disruption that they’re going to do, and they’re expecting to save maybe $170,000, which is one per cent of their budget deficit.”
Waller also has concerns about students living outside of the catchment area not being able to transfer to Sir Richard McBride Elementary with their friends.
Camille Henderson is worried about the effects of the building possibly being abandoned. “There’s a lot of activity in the park at night. Less people around I think would make it a more dangerous place to be.”
The meeting was the fourth of five between schools on the possible closure list and the Vancouver School Board. Parents from Queen Alexandra Elementary will meet with the VSB on Monday. A public feedback phase starts on November 2nd. A decision on which schools will be closed will be made by the VSB in December.
