ASPEN, CO (NEWS1130) – Ashleigh McIvor has suffered a season ending knee injury. Training at the X Games, the first ever Olympic ski cross champion has a suspected torn ACL in her left knee.
Other than the Olympics, the X games are the marquee event for ski cross competitors. In a Canada Ski Cross release, the 2009 World Champion said she was anxious to ski the Aspen course and was surprised where she hurt herself. “It’s always the biggest and burliest on the circuit,” she said. “So I’m glad I got one flight in off the massive last jump before hurting myself on a smaller jump that I hadn’t even thought to be scared of. I just came into this triple a little too hot and overshot it, landing way out on the flats.
The 27 year old from Whistler won silver at last years X games and will have to undergo surgery after Wednesday’s injury on her anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.
“I’ve definitely seen better days, but things could be much worse. I just have to keep it all in perspective. I don’t have a head injury, and I don’t have a spinal injury. This will heal and I’ll be back. It’s all part of the game.”
McIvor won gold at the first ever female ski cross Olympic event on Cypress Mountain just under a year ago. She had not won any events this season but did place second at a race in Italy and third at an event in France this season.
