VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More people are getting bills for trips across the Golden Ears Bridge they’ve never taken. An estimated three per cent of bills have been mistakenly sent because of misread license plates.
Nick Peszel admits getting a bridge toll bill for a company vehicle that’s stationed on the other side of the province (in the Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge area) was a bit of a shock.
“[I] thought maybe one of the license plates or the vehicles had been stolen, phoned in and got to the point where I demanded to see a photo of the vehicle, so we could determine whether it was one of ours. As soon as she pulled up the photo, she said, oh, it’s a mis-read.”
Ken Hardie with TransLink admits it isn’t a perfect system, and there are license plates that are either partially obscured, dirty, damaged or the machine just doesn’t pick it up very clearly.
He says anyone with an issue should call the Quickpass office to get it cleared.
Peszel did clear his by phone, but says he would have liked some kind of documentation.
Other drivers who have been mistakenly billed tell News1130, they haven’t bothered to complain.
