Blockbuster Video closing a third of its Canadian stores

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While smaller chains like Vancouver’s Videomatica are disappearing, the big chains are making deep cuts.  Blockbuster Video is closing a third of its Canadian stores.

The move affects 140 locations, each employing about 10 people. The stores will close forever on June 18.  Video rentals at those stores will end May 26.

There’s a chance the remaining 280 stores across Canada could lose the Blockbuster name. The US arm of the chain has a new owner already, and it is now fighting with the Canadian division over the rights to the Blockbuster name.

The stores will be holding big sales at the end of May, as stock is liquidated.
