Flooding near Dawson Creek forces evacuations

By

DAWSON CREEK (NEWS1130) – Highway 16 near Prince George has been reopened after being washed out, but drivers on Highway 52 between Dawson Creek and Tumbler Ridge are still being detoured.

Mike Lorimer with the Ministry of Transportation says water levels are still high and engineers are trying to decide how to fix the washed out portion of Highway 52.

“[We’re working on] either a permanent fix or just a temporary one, so we’re looking at whether or not putting a culvert back in the hole and filling it is the right solution, or whether or not we look at some sort of bridge,” he explains.

He says that work should start shortly.

Meanwhile, one home is dangerously close to falling in a swollen creek, and two RV parks had to be evacuated thanks to the past several days’ torrential rain.

The good news is that the rain is tapering off. A flood warning was issued for the Peace region Saturday.
