Air Canada and CUPE agree to binding arbitration

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Air Canada and the union representing its flight attendants have agreed to binding arbitration to settle their contract dispute.

The two sides reached the agreement today at a meeting involving representatives with the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

News releases from the two sides say that hearings will begin next week and an arbitration award will be made by November 7th.

Both parties also agreed to withdraw unfair labour practice complaints that they filed against each other earlier this year.

CUPE president Paul Moist says binding arbitration is the best way to go given the federal government has made it difficult to negotiate by trying to take away the workers right to strike.

CUPE intends to take its fight to preserve free collective bargaining to Parliament Hill with a Friday noon hour protest.
