Whitecaps game a go thanks to goodwill

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Unionized workers at BC Place won’t strike before the Vancouver Whitecaps’ final game of the season on Saturday. They served 72-hour strike notice earlier this week.

About 600 workers can legally walk off the job this weekend. They do everything from trades to first aid to security.

Karen Tankard with the BCGEU explains why they’ve decided not to strike, at least not yet. “This is a goodwill gesture on our part. We want our members, Whitecaps fans and the Whitecaps organization to enjoy the final game of the season.”

What happens next is up in the air. “At this point we have nothing else to report,” says Tankard. “But conversations are continuing all day long to decide strategy.”

She says it’s far too early to say whether there will be picket lines outside BC Place for next month’s Grey Cup game.
