Major power outage in Richmond

By

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Hydro has restored power to tens of thousands of customers in Richmond.

Originally, around 40,000 customers were in the dark just after 6 p.m.

Greg Alexis with BC Hydro says a blown transformer at a substation is to blame. “Typically we have two transformers working out of that substation and we actually had one down for regular maintenance. What happened is that due to peak demand at the time the one transformer couldn’t handle it all.”

The outage spanned from Highway 99 to the ocean and from the Fraser River to Blundell.

There was also a large power outage in Chilliwack, with about 8,000 customers without power there at one point.
