PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – A man from Burnaby who pretended he had cancer to scam people out of their money will have to stay in prison for another two years.
Sixty-five-year-old Douglas Archie Clark has also been ordered to pay more than $500,000 in restitution.
Clark pleaded guilty to more than 10 fraud charges after his own son testified against him earlier this week in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court.
His victims include family members and former friends. Clark told them he was with the Canadian military and needed cash for cancer treatments that weren’t covered by his medical plan. He even wore a navy uniform from time to time.
The scam brought in more than $1 million.
“A good portion of Clark’s victims are people he knows,” said Insp. Dave Fleugel with the Ridge Meadows RCMP when Clark was charged last June. “He has been very convincing in his scams, and his victims honestly believe that he is employed, or was employed, with the military.”
Clark was handed a three-year prison sentence, but a year was knocked off because of credit for time served.
