Fire guts Tandoori King restaurant in southeast Van

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Crews battled a stubborn fire at a three-storey restaurant and office building in East Vancouver.

Flames started tearing through the roof of the Tandoori King on Fraser Street near 64th Ave just before 6 p.m. No one was hurt and there is no word on the cause.

The blaze left the owner at a loss for words. Manny Kooner said his family started the restaurant almost 25 years ago. He said it’s difficult to think about the next step.

“I don’t even know where to start, after this is all over,” he said. “I kind of see my childhood burning down right now.”

Kooner calls the situation heartbreaking.

“I was nine years old when they started the business, and I’ve always had my hand in it some how. I’m 32 now, and it’s still a part of me.”

Kooner says one of his employees spotted flames on the roof, while taking out the garbage around 5:30. He says everyone got out of the restaurant safely, and offices on the upper floors were also evacuated.

The next challenge Kooner faces is finding out what’s left inside, a proposition he calls ‘scary’.

Fire crews initially attacked the fire from inside the building, but had to retreat outside for safety purposes, fighting the fire in a defensive mode.
