Man in Motion makes a stop at Rick Hansen Secondary

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – They weren’t even born when Rick Hansen crossed the globe for the Man in Motion tour, but that didn’t stop hundreds of students at Rick Hansen Secondary in Abbotsford from cheering and screaming when he came to their school.

Hansen was there to kick off Day 267 of the 25th anniversary relay, and you could feel the excitement in the school as he spoke to a packed gymnasium. He says there have been huge leaps forward in accessibility since his Man in Motion tour.

“Twenty-five years ago, it was a bit of an anomaly to see someone out in a wheelchair or who was blind. Today we see them everywhere and that’s a result of the infrastructure modifications for transportation, housing and school.”

Hansen says the work isn’t finished yet, adding there is still improvement needed in building code legislation and enforcement so that nothing is missed.

Former Vancouver Canuck Trevor Linden was also in Abbotsford with Hansen to run a leg of the relay.

“Kids in the school today weren’t around when he journeyed across the world, but his legacy will live forever and that takes a pretty special person to create that.”

Linden is a long time friend of Hansen and says he was honoured to be asked to take part in the relay.
