Whitecaps and Sounders renew rivalry

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps will be looking to get back into the win column this afternoon as they take on the Seattle Sounders in the first Cascadia Cup derby match of the season.
The Pacific Northwest rivals will both be looking to bounce back after having a win streak snapped in their previous contest. The Sounders had won five straight games prior to a 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake, while the Whitecaps had three straight MLS victories before losing 4-1 to the New England Revolution.
The Whitecaps will be looking to make up some ground in the Western Conference standings with a win. Vancouver sits in fourth place with 17 points, five back of third-place Seattle.
The Whitecaps will be hard-pressed to score goals, as the Sounders bring the stingiest defence in the league into today’s match. Seattle has allowed just four goals in its 10 matches this season.
Vancouver is coming off of a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC in the first leg of the Canadian Championship final. Eric Hassli scored a beautiful goal late in the match to earn the draw.
The two teams have met many teams in history, but this will be only their third contest in Major League Soccer. The ‘Caps have a win and a draw in the two previous meetings.
The Cascadia Cup is a fan-based trophy that is awarded to the club that has the best head-to-head record in MLS regular season matches between the Whitecaps, Sounders and Portland Timbers. The Sounders are the defending champions after two wins and two draws.
