VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Two businesses on Broadway in Mount Pleasant are in ruins this morning after a fire.
The blaze was in a prominent area, just across Kingsgate Mall. Hundreds looked on as several fire teams surrounded the two buildings and hosed down the flames, which flared up even hours after the initial call at 8 p.m.

It’s still not clear was sparked the fire, which has destroyed the Pho Thai Son Vietnamese restaurant and the Thuan Phut Vietnamese supermarket.

“We shop at that market all the time. It’s owned by a really nice family. I feel really terrible for them,” said one woman as she looked on at the firefighting efforts.
“That was a good restaurant. That was one of the most popular restaurants in the neighbourhood and now it’s gone,” said another man, also in the crowd of onlookers.
A wall that collapsed damaged a gas metre, which further intensified the fire.
Firefighters worked on the fire for several hours and were able to contain the fire to the one building.
The neighbourhood is still recovering from two separate fires in 2009, which also destroyed favourite hangouts among the locals.
