Lions reach 10 wins, clinch playoff spot

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions earned a spot in the post-season after leading early and holding off the Calgary Stampeders late in a 27-22 victory. The win moves the Lions four points clear of the Stamps at the top of the CFL West.
Quarterback Travis Lulay had first half touchdown tosses to Sean Gore and Nick Moore, as BC led 17-6 at the break. Lulay has now thrown a touchdown pass in 25 straight games.
Calgary started the the second half with a bang as Charleston Hughes caused Andrew Harris to fumble, with Hughes’ teammate Brandon Smith scooping up the ball and running back 48 yards for a Stampeder touchdown. That cut the Leos lead to 17-13.
Harris got his revenge early in the final quarter as he had a three yard major to give the home side a 27-13 advantage in front of over 31,000 fans at BC Place.
Calgary came back with a field goal and a TD to cut the lead to five as they missed a two point convert.
BC defensive back Ryan Phillips had a big interception off of Kevin Glenn with the Stamps driving with three minutes to go. He also knocked down Calgary’s final pass in the last minute.
Dante March also had an interception for the Lions.
BC held on to the ball for over 35 minutes, to control the game, especially in the third quarter.
Both defensive tackle Eric Taylor and centre Angus Reid left the game in the first half. Reid returned in the second half, Taylor did not.
The Leos are in Hamilton next Friday afternoon.
