Rapid Buses were only half-full on first day of service

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – It seems that TransLink may need to convince you the new Rapid Bus service over the Port Mann Bridge will save you time.

Derek Zabel with the transit authority says buses running between the exchange in Langley and the Braid Street SkyTrain station were running about half-full on its first full day of service. But Zabel isn’t worried yet.

“Traditionally, when you look at transit in December, it’s a little bit slower because some people have taken the month off; they’re getting ready for vacation time. Students are also getting ready for exams, so classes aren’t as frequent,” he tells us.

“In January, usually about the second week when students are getting back into their regular school routines and people are back from vacations… that’s when you’ll see the true test of how many people are going to be taking that #555 service, as well.”

Zabel says the buses can fit about fifty people, and they were taking just 22 minutes to get from Langley to New Westminster yesterday.
