Vandermeer signing adds depth on Canucks’ defence

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –  On day two of training camp, the Canucks have added to their blue line corps, signing big unrestricted free agent defenceman Jim Vandermeer to a one-year two-way contract.

The 32-year-old Caroline, Alberta native spent last season in San Jose and has been skating here in the city with the Canucks players since July.

“As far as being a leg up, I have to go out there and play well and show the coaching staff what I can do.  Skate with the older guys who do have a voice, that might help me a little bit but ultimately I have to go out there and show them myself,” says Vandermeer, who says he brings a physical aspect to the game.

Meanwhile, winger David Booth missed a another skate today with a groin strain.  Vigneault says that Booth will have to have an MRI.  Defenceman Dan Hamhuis and forward Zack Kassian did take in the workout today.  Hamhuis had been battling a groin injury while Kassian had back spasms.

Roberto Luongo remains a Canuck with rumours swirling about his next destination.  General manager Mike Gillis said this week that there has been a lot more interest in his goaltender than most people realize.

Coaches only have two scrimmages Wednesday and Thursday to evaluate players in a game situation before Saturday’s season opener against Anaheim at Rogers Arena.
