Is sex really good exercise?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – How are those New Year’s weight-loss resolutions going?

Don’t fret too much: Trimming down can be hard to do, especially when you think a certain bedtime activity helps shed the pounds.

One reason many people don’t drop the weight they want is that they believe in the wrong things, buying into false claims. The New England Journal of Medicine is exposing some of those weight-loss myths, including the notion sex is great exercise.

We hit the street with a pop quiz: How many calories do you think the average session between the sheets burns?

“Oh geez, that depends on what type of day it is,” Dave tells News1130. “I’d guess anywhere between 100 and 1,000 calories depending on how… uh.. rigorous you get.”

“That’s a tricky question,” says Jason, apparently a marathon man.

“It is exercise… but calories burned? How about five?” he laughs.

Would you believe the only study that scientifically measured energy output found that sex burns an unimpressive average of 21 calories over six minutes?

“What? If you’re by yourself maybe!” Dave pipes in.

To put it in perspective, you would have to have sex 25.7 times to burn off a single Big Mac.

Beats trying to Zumba.
