Surrey secures funding for four new schools

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The mayor of BC’s second largest and fastest growing city says it’s a start but there’s no question more will be needed.

All the land has been acquired for two new schools in the Clayton area and two in Grandview. The first to open will be a high school in the Clayton area by 2015/16.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts is thrilled but hopes there’s more to come. “We see 1,000 to 1,200 people move into the city per month, predominantly families moving here to raise their children. So, having the schools here is really important.”

“I think we’re very innovative in terms of working closely with the school district, the Ministry of Education, we’ve been able to move things forward,” she adds.

The district was hoping for $80 million for new schools, it got about $56 million.

The province says there’s more to come.
