Mayor confident in ending homelessness by 2015

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver’s mayor remains confident the city can end street homelessness by 2015.

His comments come as the city wraps up its latest homeless count today.

While it’s too soon to say if numbers are down from last year, the city says there’s a noticeable difference compared to a few years ago.

Mayor Gregor Robertson still thinks his 2015 target will be met. “We’re going to have to have the provincial government really stepping up, continuing to provide support for shelters and permanent housing.”

The city’s homeless advocate Judy Graves, who is retiring at the end of May, agrees.

“It isn’t rocket science. We’re not looking for a way to cure cancer. We’re looking for the housing we need.”

Final numbers from this count are expected within the next couple of months.
