A huge crowd expected for Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Almost a quarter of a million people are expected to descend on Surrey today for the annual Vaisakhi Parade.

Security at the event isn’t expected to change much in light of the Boston bombings.

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger says they’re always tweaking their tactical plan to prepare for any event.

“We’re obviously very aware of events that are going on around the world, but for us, we have a very well developed plan in place to respond to any contingency that we might encounter as a result of this many people coming to a very public event,” he explains.

He also says they’ve been in touch with organizers and the City of Surrey for the past few months to minimize problems they’ve had with controversial floats in the past.

“Because of that well structured planning process, we’ve mitigated a lot of those problems we’ve had in the past,” Montague adds.

Road closures will be in place until 5 p.m.
