SURREY (NEWS1130) – Mounties say a brain injury could have played a major part in a crash in South Surrey that killed five people.

The driver involved in that deadly crash just over a week ago has now died.  Following surgery for a condition that was discovered as a result of being hurt in the crash, the 46-year-old passed away yesterday.

A week ago Sunday, a car carrying five members of one family was T-boned by a minivan at the intersection of 176th Street and 32nd Avenue.  RCMP say the tragedy happened when the driver of the minivan blew through a red light.

Investigators are still trying to figure out if speed was also a factor.Surrey memorial

“We still have a lot of evidence to go through,” Cpl. Bert Paquet with Surrey RCMP tells News1130.  “We have collected witnesses statements, but we still have to go through the analysis of the collision scene, lab results and medical reports.  I believe we owe it to both families involved to keep our investigation active and we are doing so.”

On Friday, a private funeral was held for the family members.  Hundreds of people turned out, many who didn’t know the victims.

Pawandeep Arjot, 31 was killed, as were her two kids, Annish Sachdeva, 5, Jessica Sachdeva, 3; her sister-in-law Neelam Rani Dhingra, 47; and her mother-in-law, Vidya Wanti Sachdeva, 68.
