PEACE ARCH (NEWS1130) – It’s been one week since part of the bridge over the Skagit River in Washington State collapsed, and some businesses say their bottom line is starting to take a hit.
Peter Raju owns the duty-free stop at the Peace Arch crossing and says his business has dropped by 50 per cent.
“I don’t think we’re going to recover what we lost this month. I think we have to do it over the balance of the period. The people that have not travelled, will they go back? It’s going to be difficult to recover what we’ve lost.”
But Raju is staying optimistic. “People now know about the detours and realize it’s not taking as long as originally reported; hopefully, Canadians will start travelling.”
He feels right now, many drivers are either confused or can’t be bothered by the detours.
A temporary replacement for the bridge is expected to be installed in a couple of weeks.
