VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Do you know the expression “If you don’t vote, you can’t complain?”
A new survey shows quite a few people are complaining about not having voted.
Voter turnout was at 58 per cent in last month’s provincial election.
That still leaves about 1.3 million people who didn’t cast their ballots.
And Steve Mossop of Insights West says a new poll shows many wish that they had.
“Yeah, it’s an amazing number. Forty-one per cent regret not voting in the last provincial election. But even if they had, it wouldn’t have changed the outcome,” he explains.
Mossop says the largest portion of those who didn’t vote indicate they would have supported the BC Liberals.
As for why they didn’t vote, Mossop says it’s more than just voter apathy.
“Really, the number one reason that people didn’t vote is that they felt none of the candidates deserve their vote, and very close behind that was they truly couldn’t decide who to vote for,” he explains.
Mossop says online voting had a big appeal among British Columbians, as a way to boost voter turnout.
