BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby’s fake dentist did not show up for a court hearing today. Tung Sheng Wu was supposed to appear after he was accused of violating a previous court order, telling him to stop his illegal practice.
The judge issued a BC-wide warrant for Wu’s arrest and a permanent injunction banning him from practicing dentistry.
A declaration of civil or criminal contempt was withheld until Wu appears in court, in person.
News1130 Legal Analyst Michael Shapray says Wu could face criminal charges if any of his former patients falls ill, and the sickness can be linked back the illegal clinic Wu was running.
“Certainly, if that comes up and they can link it, then I suppose it would open the door to … criminal negligence causing bodily harm, or if someone were to die criminal negligence causing death,” he says.
As News1130 told you last week, a public health warning has been issued regarding Wu’s practice on Southwood Street in Burnaby.
The BC College of Dental Surgeons launched a private investigation after it received a tip that the phony dentist was still practicing, despite a 2003 court order telling him to stop.
The equipment Wu was using has been tested and Fraser Health issued a warning, saying none of the gear had been properly sterilized.
There are concerns that roughly 1,500 patients could have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis, or a number of other illnesses.
