Canucks hit halfway point of pre-season

EDMONTON, AB (NEWS1130) – Vancouver dropped to 0-3 in the pre-season after losing to a more experienced Oilers squad 5-2. Mike Santorelli and Jannik Hansen had the Canucks goals. Goalie Eddie Lack made 27 saves.

If it was not for the Swedish netminder, Edmonton would have won by a bigger margin.

Local product Santorelli opened the scoring 80 seconds into the game. Sam Gagner replied on a power-play later in the period for Edmonton.

The Oilers took the lead for good on a short-handed goal by David Perron early in the second.

37-year-old veteran Ryan Smyth made it 3-1, before Hansen scored late in the final period.

Nail Yakupov and Will Acton, who scored on an empty net, capped the scoring for the home team.

Yannick Weber had a good evening on the blueline, as he stopped Sam Gagner from scoring on an open net with a diving play in the second period. He also had an assist and missed a point blank opportunity to score in the third period.

New coach John Torterella was behind the bench for the first time this pre-season.

David Booth was supposed to play in the game, but the fragile American winger left the pre-game skate at Rogers Arena with a groin problem and did not make the trip.

His replacement, Nicklas Jensen left the game in the first period with an undisclosed injury and did not return.

Vancouver’s Jordan Schroeder was hit by a Nail Yakupov slap shot in the second period and was favouring his left leg when he left the ice. Coach John Torterella said Schroeder would be examined by doctors in Vancouver.

The Canucks host Phoenix on Monday.
