Wireless Code of Conduct now in effect

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Big changes to the cell phone industry kick in today, as the Wireless Code of Conduct comes into effect.
Starting today, you’re no no longer held to a three-year term and your data usage and roaming fees are capped for new contracts. Bruce Cran with the Consumers’ Association of Canada says it’s been a long time coming.
“We would like to see no contracts, no locked phones, and all of the things that people in other parts of the world have, including a rationalization of the pricing structure so that we’re not the highest in the world.
Cran says you still have an obligation to read the contract you’re signing, and he recommends you shop around as much as possible to make sure you’re getting the right phone and plan for you.
“In an ideal world, we would read the contract… I’ve got to tell you that that is not something that we believe people will do. People don’t read these huge multi-page contracts. But they should ask the questions.”
The CRTC created the code of conduct in response to customers’ biggest complaints about the wireless industry.
