Barge runs aground on the North Shore

By CityNews Staff

A barge ran aground in the Vancouver Harbour Thursday.

The vessel was seen tipped sideways and partially submerged with a tugboat holding it in place.

The barge is beached near Kings Mill Walk Park and the North Shore Auto Mall, and was first spotted earlier in the morning.

Port officials tell CityNews the barge was carrying sand and rock dredged from the Burrard Inlet.

“The barge has now been stabilised and secured, with the dredged materials expected to be transferred to another barge shortly,” said the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

“The barge is not blocking navigation channels or impacting port operations, nor leaking fuel or hydrocarbons.”

It’s not yet clear what caused the barge to run aground.
