Panel report on developing tanker safety system coming today

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The feds are in town, releasing the report from an expert panel set up in March to help Canada develop what it calls a “world class” tanker safety system.
But environmentalists like Eion Madden with the Wilderness Committee remain skeptical. “I hope that they start looking at the actual statistics that the majority of folks in British Columbia don’t want this to proceed.”
He claims the expenditures mentioned cannot undo the facts.
“The water off our west coast…you are lucky to get 10 per cent of that oil out of there. I’d like to see the federal government spend that money on bringing us to a cleaner future. Not sending us in the wrong direction.”
The report comes less than a month before a joint review panel is expected to release its findings on Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline proposal.
Last month the federal spill response system was also deemed to be inadequate.
