Maple Ridge shooting victim dies, IHIT takes over homicide investigation

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over a shooting investigation in Maple Ridge after the victim died from his injuries nearly two weeks after the incident.
The shooting happened on Aug. 18 in the Cottonwood neighbourhood. Maple Ridge RCMP were called to the area of 236 Street and 114A Avenue at about 10 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found a 56-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle parked outside a residence. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The victim remained in hospital until Aug. 31, when he died from his injuries.
Police believe the shooting was targeted and say the victim was known to police. His name has not been released.
“We are grateful to the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit, which has been conducting a thorough and robust investigation to date,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
“With the victim’s death, IHIT investigators are now in a good position to take over conduct of the homicide investigation. Investigators continue to work with the victim’s family and friends to gain an understanding of his activities, relationships and movements leading up to his death.”
