BC Hydro crews getting ready for possible power outages

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – It’s starting to feel a lot like winter.
A few flakes fluttered to the ground in parts of the Lower Mainland this morning, and while we aren’t expecting more than a skiff of snow, it’s enough to have first responders ready.
BC Hydro trucks have been prepped and chained, and crews have been getting daily weather briefings. Trouble Response Manager Rob Lidstone says they are prepared for snow, wind or rain — whatever a storm can throw at them.
He tells us the cold snap has an effect on branches and other vegetation near power lines. “[They’re] much more brittle and susceptible to snow loads; we get branches breaking when we start getting some of our wet snow that we experience in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.”
If the power does go out, he says you should give them a call, even if you have a smart meter. “We would ask the customers turn off or unplug all appliances and electrical equipment — particularly those that generate heat.”
But you should leave a light on inside and outside so you and crews can see when power is restored to your home.
