Politicians apologies falling flat: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Recent apologies made by Canadian politicians are lacking one critical component, according to one media expert.
George Orr says an apology without action is meaningless. “It’s just become such an easy and sleazy thing to do. They apologize in the absence of actually wanting to change. They apologize just because they got caught, it’s like a six-year-old who has made a mess in the kitchen.”
Orr adds in order for an apology to begin being genuine, it should come before the person is caught. “Make a mess, clean it up. That would be the start of a genuine apology.”
Federal Minister James Moore apologized this week for comments he made about child poverty and Toronto Mayor Rob Ford apologized for insinuations he made about a reporter during an interview.
Orr says the public is growing tired of what he calls the empty gestures. “Over time people come to realize they’re not sorry at all, they’re just sorry they got caught, they’re sorry they got embarrassed, or they’re sorry they ticked off their political master.”
