BC says ferry service cuts are necessary, despite objections

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The province is standing firm on the need for millions of dollars in cuts to ferry service on the minor routes, as a month’s worth of public input wraps up.
The plan has been the focus of anger on Vancouver Island ; whether any of the objections will lead to changes remains unclear.
But the province insists it needs to find $18.9 million in savings to ensure the system is sustainable.
Bowen Island mayor Jack Adelaar says it’s going to hurt Island life. “It’s going to affect economic activity. It’s going to affect the social interaction that we have. Specifically with us, we are part of the Lower Mainland.”
He tells us it’s been the hot topic in his community since the province announced its plan last month.
“People are upset. It’s like we’re never listened to. It’s like we’re told what to do, but we’re never listened to.”
The province intends to make its final decisions by April.
