Charge upgraded to second-degree murder in New West attack

By

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – A teen now faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of a 19-year-old who was attacked in New Westminster last week.

It is an upgrade in the charge against the 16-year-old boy, who was originally facing assault-related counts.

Corporal Dominic Duchesneau says this development comes after 19-year-old Karim Meskine was taken off life support Friday night. “The investigators have spoken with Crown counsel over the weekend and this morning charges have been laid for second degree murder.”

Duchesneau also says Crown will seek an adult sentence in the case.

Friends are remembering Meskine as a gentle person, and have planned a memorial dinner for Monday evening in Surrey.

Police believe he was the target of a random robbery attempt that turned violent.
