NDP environment critic looks back on 2013

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – British Columbians had a lot to talk about when it came to the environment this year. That has the NDP environment critic hoping 2014 will be more environmentally positive.
British Columbia’s century old Water Act and pipeline concerns dominated headlines for much of 2013. The Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline was approved by the National Energy Board in December after many consultations and months of warnings from First Nations and Northern communities about environmental concerns in the Fraser River Watershed.
Going forward, Spencer Chandra Herbert says he hopes all levels of government and citizens will think about how our actions affect air, water, and wildlife.
“We often talk about the debt and deficits in financial circles, but we don’t talk about the environmental debt we’re leaving our children, and our children’s children… climate change and an environment which won’t support healthy wildlife and good quality air, we have to consider that too,” says Chandra Herbert.
He’s eager to get back to the legislature and see how the government plans to overhaul the current Water Act. The act currently in place lets companies like Nestle extract as much as two-million litres of water for bottling while paying as little as 85-cents.
