Expert warns more newspaper closures are likely

KAMLOOPS (NEWS1130) – The Kamloops Daily News is closing its doors for good because of falling revenues.
The paper will close within 60 days, leaving the city without a daily news source.
Ross Howard with the Langara journalism department says the closure could leave a void in that market and others of the same size. “Nobody else has the resources and the historically perspective to do really good journalism. As people turn to other online sources, they’re going to get a very much lower quality journalism and information that isn’t as reliable.”
Howard says profit margins are driving closures of small to mid-size markets and that journalism is now taking a back seat to advertising. “Clearly the only thing that determines their survival right now is whether they get enough advertisers and whether people are prepared to pay for it. Circulation itself doesn’t pay for papers.”
Howard doesn’t expect this closure to be the last.
