Hollywood Theatre gets another extension

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A previously unknown clause has given Kitsilano’s Hollywood Theatre a 45-day extension, banning development.
“It’s something that Kitsilano needs and it’s something that the city needs,” says Mel Lehan with the Save the Hollywood Theatre Coalition.
And Lehan and the Coalition have more time to broker a deal between the owner and city.
The previous ban on development was to expire January 20th and now a 1984 clause uncovered by city staff extends that.
The clause dicates that if the building’s use is changed from a theatre, the last 10 feet must be demolished to widen the laneway behind it.
Lehan says there’s no shortage of people wanting to use the space.
“We’ve talked with the Vancouver Symphony. The Vancouver Opera said they’d like to work here. The Vancouver International Film Festival would like to use the space.”
Lehan is confident they along with the city and owner will come to terms.
“I’m optimistic that we can [find a solution]. Over the next while, we’ve got this 45 days now to work on it, I’m optimistic that we can come up with something that will save the Hollywood.”
He says negotiations are ongoing and that the extension just gives them more time to find a solution.
The theatre’s owner is scheduled to meet with city staff Wednesday.
