SURREY (NEWS1130) – After 25 homicides in the Surrey in 2013, the NDP will be revealing some ideas on how to make the city a safer place.
People in Newton have come together to demand more be done to address challenges in the community after the death of Julie Paskall last month. She was attacked outside the local hockey arena while waiting for her son.
A town hall meeting was packed earlier this month in Newton and Mayor Dianne Watts formed a task force to deal with the problems.
“We want to talk about the contributing factors behind this, the homelessness in the area, the recovery homes, mental health issues and addiction issues,” says local NDP MLA Harry Bains, who will be joining fellow MLAs and NDP leader Adrian Dix for a news conference at 10 a.m. at the Newton Cultural Centre.
“Some of the young women tell me they don’t carry their purse in public any more because of fear that somebody is going to rob them. They are always looking over their shoulder to see who’s following them,” he tells News1130.
Meanwhile another candlelight vigil for Paskall is planned for Saturday in Holland Park on Old Yale Road.
It will be hosted by the Surrey Minor Hockey Association and the city from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Teams are encouraged to wear their jerseys.
