Old tugboat sinks for a second time

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A tugboat that was being towed for inspection ran into some more problems Friday morning in West Vancouver waters.
The 112-year-old tug was tied to a government dock when first went down in Squamish on Monday night, spilling as much as 1,500 litres of diesel fuel into the Mamquam Blind Channel.
It was that tug that was being towed from Squamish to a Fraser River shipyard early Friday morning when it went down again.
It’s resting now underneath 120 metres of water at Point Atkinson, off the coast of West Vancouver.
Dan Bate speaks for the Canadian Coast Guard and says investigators have flown overhead to see if there is any sign of environmental damage.
“The Coast Guard will continue to monitor the situation. If additional cleanup is required, at that time, we will launch a cleanup.”
He says the question about the vessel’s future hasn’t been answered.
“I think that will be decided over the next few days. The issue is the fact that it sank in 120 metres of water, which is extremely deep. We’ll have to make an assessment later on.”
