Richmond mayor against using property taxes for TransLink

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – The latest suggestion from BC’s transportation minister on how to fund TransLink is not going over well with Richmond’s mayor.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone has suggested that a hike in property taxes could fund a big part of transit expansion plans.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie says as far as he’s concerned, property taxes aren’t an option. “If we wanted to use property taxes, we could have done that years ago. The mayors have been resolute, no more property taxes for TransLink. We have to look at other sources of funding.”

Brodie is among the mayors who think the proposed transit referendum is a terrible idea and says he has seen no progress in talks with the minister since last fall.
