Security concerns for Canadians heading to Sochi

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Visitors and athletes should stay out of train stations and be extra cautious in large crowds in Sochi according to security experts.
They say there are obvious concerns right now with all the recent threats against the upcoming Olympic Games.
Surrounding areas outside of Sochi may have fewer police and security because the focus will be where the crowds are.
Former CSIS officer Michel-Juneau-Katsuya says athletes will get some extra protection there, but the general public and tourists will be left on their own.
“Ultimately Russia is known to be a very violent, very criminal society and very corrupted. It might be possible that organized crime will try to use this situation to scheme people. You should always try to identify officials.”
Foreign affairs is out with several advisories to keep in mind before you travel, it is also asking you to register abroad in case of an emergency.
