Murderer granted unescorted day passes from prison

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Nearly 25 years after one of the worst crimes in BC history, the man behind the killing rampage has been granted unescorted day passes from prison.

Steven Leclair shot and killed three people in bar in Vancouver back in September of 1980, then drove to the Richmond RCMP detachment where he killed one officer and wounded another.

Despite admitting he still needs treatment, the National Parole Board is letting him out of jail for up to 72 hours per month.

Leclair also has to abide by a long list of conditions.

He was granted escorted day passes in 2010 and the parole board says he hasn’t caused any problems during his absences from prison.
